The Cairns Esplanade
Cairns, known as the Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, is a great place to stay if you’re planning an excursion to the reef. But when you’re not out on the water, make sure you take a walk, or two, along the esplanade. Loaded with restaurants, a lagoon, weekend markets and even a ferris wheel, the esplanade is the perfect spot for a morning jog, an evening stroll, a bike ride or just sitting and hanging out.
The Local Lagoon
If you’re looking for a fun place to sunbathe and swim without fear of stingers and other sea critters, the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is the place for you. For the low, low cost of $0 (that’s right, free entry!), the lagoon includes natural sand beaches, lifeguards on duty, onsite toilet and shower facilities and is filled with filtered salt water from the Trinity Inlet. If all that isn’t enough for you, there are also some really cute fish sculptures adorning the lagoon that are great for photo ops.
