top 10 things to do in
When we arrived in Byron Bay, we immediately knew we’d arrived in a place we would fall in love with. We couldn’t believe the stunning views from the shore or how cute downtown Byron Bay was. We really could’ve stayed much longer than we did and we definitely hope we get a chance to visit again. Here are some of the Top things we did during our time in Byron Bay.
1. cape byron lighthouse trail
Don’t just look at the lighthouse and head back to town. The best part about the Cape Byron Lighthouse is actually the surrounding lighthouse trail. You’ll get several incredible views along the way and a nice walk down to the most easterly point in all of Australia.
This point makes for some dramatic photos of the cliffs, rocks, crashing water and of course the lighthouse. If you’re lucky like us, you might even get to see a kangaroo hopping up the cliffside.
2. the lighthouse
The first thing we did when arriving in Byron Bay was visit this incredible lighthouse. It was built in 1901 and stands tall on top of a scenic cliff. When we arrived the air was filled with smoke due to the fires nearby, but even with the thick layer of fog like smoke it was a great introduction to one of our favorite towns. The lighthouse itself has a miniature castle-like structure and makes for some amazing photos.
3. wategos beach
You may end up at Wategos Beach by just walking around the Cape Byron Lighthouse Trail or you can just drive right up and park. This is a beautiful beach to stop and take it easy after walking the trail. Since it’s not as close to town as Byron Beach it’s not as crowded either. The beach is surrounded by beautiful trees, rocks and some nice houses too. If you’re visiting the lighthouse don’t miss Wategos Beach.
4. fisherman's lookout
Fisherman’s Lookout is a great spot at the end of Clarke’s Beach. It’s perfect for a beautiful view of the beach and a great place to watch surfers. You also have a good chance of spotting dolphins. We ended up visiting this place several times and just walking along the surrounding beach. It’s such a laid back location with easy parking making it an easy choice for a relaxing afternoon.
5. visit craig parry photography
One place you don’t want to miss when exploring downtown Byron Bay is Craig Parry Photography. His work is some of the best underwater photography we’ve ever seen. There’s a great variety of photography from surfing and landscapes to sea life. They even sell small prints for a reasonable price for those of us who can’t afford the incredible large acrylic prints on the walls.
6. main beach & byron beach
Byron Beach is a quintessential Australian beach. It’s close to an awesome downtown, has soft white sand and beautiful turquoise water. After lunch it’s so easy to just walk down to the beach and enjoy the views. Main Beach is perfect for a full beach day as well. Get there early, take it easy and then you’ll be able to just walk right to town for lunch and dinner. It doesn’t really get any better than this. Byron Beach is also an amazing place to watch the sunset.
7. walk around downtown
Byron Bay is just big enough to not feel the need for a big city and small enough to feel like a cozy beach town. Make sure you explore all of the side streets and finish with a great walk along the oceanfront park.
We absolutely fell in love with the town of Byron Bay. Obviously the beaches are beautiful, but it’s the actual downtown that separated it from other beach towns. There’s so much to eat, great places to shop and of course it ends right at the stunning Byron Beach.
8. tallow beach
This is the incredible beach you often see in Byron Bay postcards. If you’ve hiked to the Cape Byron Lighthouse then you’ve seen this long sprawling beach. The best views of the beach are absolutely on the way up to the lighthouse. But if you’re looking for a peaceful nearly empty beach then definitely make your way to Tallow Beach. The sand ripples and wide waves will draw you in. The wide and quiet beaches will keep you there until the sun sets.
9. eat!
Byron Bay is a vegan foodie’s beach town paradise. There are so many incredible restaurants in this small beach town. Not only is the food delicious, but most of it is actually healthy as well.
We found ourselves eating so many incredible meals that never really made us feel bad for indulging. Whether you’re looking for a towering burger, handmade pasta or an acai bowl you’ll find it here. Check out our full list of Top 10 Byron Bay Restaurants.
10. snorkel or kayak julian rocks
Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go on a Kayak Tour or Snorkel Tour as we were only in Byron Bay for 2 days. But rest assured when we visit again, which we will for sure, then we’ll be doing both. The Julian Rocks snorkel tours give you access to some incredible sea life. You’ll see giant turtles, stingrays and colorful fish. A few hours kayaking around Byron Bay is a great way to see the landscape. You can take your time and enjoy the incredible views.
