Miami
Miami

We love escaping to Miami whenever we can. It’s pretty cheap and easy for us to fly from Richmond and it’s a great way to escape the winter weather of Virginia. We really enjoy the vibe, the food and the beaches. We’ll probably make at least one annual trip to Miami moving forward. So here’s a list of the top things we enjoy when we’re staying in Miami.

1. wynwood walls

Wynwood Walls
Anytime we’re in Miami we love to stop by Wynwood Walls for a quick stroll. We get to see some of our favorite works of art and there are always new pieces on display each time we visit. What’s great about The Wynwood Walls is that it’s free day or night and it’s never so busy that you can’t get a good photo of the art.
Wynwood Walls
You may want an hour or maybe just 30 minutes to enjoy the incredible variety of street art on display, but we’re confident you’ll see something you love.

2. vizcaya museum and gardens

Vizcaya Gardens
The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are located right on Miami’s beautiful waterfront just south of downtown. The property itself is the former estate of businessman James Deering. The architecture, interior and gardens are reminiscent of Tuscany. It may not be as large as many of the European palaces, but it’s just as detailed and absolutely worth checking out.

3. miami beach

Miami Beach
If you think Miami Beach is just loud cars and obnoxious music you’re wrong. There is that too though. But Miami Beach has so much more to offer. First the beach itself is amazing. It goes on for miles with white sand and clear warm waters. South Beach is a bit crowded and crazy at night especially, but that’s only for a few blocks. Just south of that area it’s all condos and hotels with an incredible oceanfront park that we’ll talk about later. What we love about Miami Beach so much is the walkability. There are a ton of places to eat, shop and chill within walking distance from the beach.

4. key biscayne

If you’re looking for an even more laid back vibe head over to Key Biscayne for the day. The beach here is absolutely stunning with picturesque palm trees surrounding the entire area. While visiting Key Biscayne you can also rent bikes and scooters to explore the entire Key. It offers great views of South Beach and Miami. You can also explore the small downtown area filled with local shops and restaurants.

5. bayfront park

Bayfront Park
Bayfront Park is a perfect place to escape the city if you need a break with a great waterfront view. There are always events going on from Yoga Classes to Concerts, but really we just like to stop by for a nice stroll along the water and to see a few palm trees after being in the city all day.

6. fairchild botanical garden

Fairchild Botanical Garden
Florida has some really top notch Botanical Gardens since its climate is perfect for so many types of trees and flowers. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden is definitely one of the best and our favorite in Miami. It’s only 20 minutes south of downtown Miami and is absolutely worth going out of your way a bit. The diversity of plants is incredible and features tons of rare tropical plants that we’re sure you’ll love.

7. south pointe park

South Pointe Park is at the very bottom of South Beach and a must if you’re staying or visiting nearby. It’s honestly one of our favorite parks. Not only is it right on the ocean, but it’s a really well thought out design. There are walking paths along the water’s edge and paths swirled in throughout the park making for a unique design. This is especially obvious when seen from above. We like to bring a towel and lay on the slopes of South Pointe Park to watch the sunset over downtown Miami.

8. south beach nightlife

South Beach Nightlife
So to be completely honest this isn’t really our cup of tea. But don’t let that stop you from having a good time. South Beach is known for its nightclubs, bars and over the top people. Even if you’re just into people watching it’s worth heading to South Beach at night to see what all the fuss is about. We think you’ll have a great time no matter what you’re doing.

9. lincoln road farmers market

This is probably our favorite Farmers Market in Miami, but there are so many to choose from and they’re all great. What’s better than getting a huge cup of sliced mango for $5 while you peruse the local produce and snacks. You’ll have no problem finding a market on almost any day you’re looking, but don’t miss the Lincoln Road Farmers Market on Sundays.

10. eat!

Bunnie Cakes
If you’re a vegan like us then you will absolutely love Miami. You’ll also probably gain a lot of weight, but hell you’re on vacation right? There are so many great places to eat from the amazing Milk Gone Nuts for homemade nut milks to Plant Miami for an elegant high end plant based meal. We have too many favorite stops to list here, so definitely check out our Top 10 Miami Restaurants.

Flight

Skyscanner is our go to site for finding the best flights based on prices, dates, times and flight length. It’s incredibly intuitive playing around with all of the airports and dates to find the best deal.

Accommodation

What would we do without Airbnb? Honestly, there are so many places we’ve been that just wouldn’t be affordable for us without Airbnb. In cities like San Francisco you’ll pay around half of what you’d pay for a comparable hotel. We can’t recommend Airbnb highly enough for your next trip.

There are a ton of great hotel/motel sites out there, but we almost always find ourselves booking our next hotel through Booking.com. The site is very user friendly and they often have more properties like small local motels than the bigger sites.

Travel Insurance

Whether you’re concerned about flight issues, medical emergencies or stolen luggage World Nomads has your back. We’ve used them for many of our trips and highly recommend their trip insurance for anyone looking for that extra level of protection. The rates are very affordable and you’ll know that you’re totally covered.
