top 10 things to do in

Mykonos
Mykonos

Among the Greek Islands, Mykonos is perhaps best known for its parties. And while the beach parties and clubs rank in the top things to do while on the island, there are so many other reasons to love this beautiful island. Here’s our Top Ten list of top things we enjoyed during our visit.

1. explore downtown

Downtown Mykonos
Downtown Mykonos is beautiful and loaded with fun shops and restaurants to experience. You can spend an entire day shopping for treasures, eating great food, sipping fun cocktails and just exploring the narrow white and blue alleys. Mykonos is one of those towns that you’ll always remember.

2. little venice

While exploring downtown, you’re sure to stumble upon Little Venice. In this waterfront section of downtown, the buildings have been erected right on the sea’s edge with their balconies overhanging the water, and it is quite evocative of the canals of Venice, Italy, hence the name. This is a beautiful spot to snag a romantic photo and enjoy a candlelit dinner right on the water.

3. Kato Myli Windmills

Kato Myli Windmills Mykonos
Also in the downtown vicinity are the famous windmills of Mykonos. While there are 16 windmills left standing on Mykonos, the five lower windmills, or Kato Myli, are the most iconic. While no longer in production, these windmills were primarily used for milling wheat. They are the first thing seen when coming into the harbour from the sea and can be seen from every point of the village.

4. kalafatis beach

This large, flat, sandy beach is really easy to access and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You can rent a chair and umbrella if you prefer not to get full sun. There are also nearby shops and restaurants so you can plan on spending quite a while at the beach then grabbing lunch or dinner not far away. This beach is quieter and less crowded than the popular party beaches, if that’s what you’re looking for.

5. fokos beach

You’ll need a car or a quad to get to this secluded and off-the-beaten-path beach which was Josh’s favorite. It’s the kind of beach to visit when you want to get away from the crowds. Fokos beach has beautiful teal water but can get a bit rough depending on the wind. I strongly recommend wearing water shoes or proceeding onto the sea with great caution as there are also some sharp rocks on the beach. There’s not a lot around but there is a tavern with some food and a nice bathroom.

6. Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm

Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm
We walked the lovely vineyards of this farm with the sun shining down on us and the warm Mykonos breeze kissing our skin. It was such a pleasant way to spend a little time away from the incredible beaches of Mykonos. After exploring the grounds, we enjoyed a late lunch and some of their homemade wine. Everything was delightful, particularly the delectable citrus soaked olives. I’m still trying to find an olive to beat these.

7. super paradise beach

Super Paradise Beach
Perhaps the most well-known beach in Mykonos, Super Paradise Beach offers a fun and unique experience. There are chairs and umbrellas lining the beach which you can rent for the day and have drinks served from the restaurant just feet away. As the day gets longer, the music is pumped in louder and louder and the crowd starts growing thicker. By the evening, you’re at a full-on beach party! If you’re not into the party scene, you should still check out this beach – just go earlier in the day. It’s a fun spot and the water is crystal clear.

8. Go clubbing

Mykonos Night
Mykonos brings the nightlife! Lucky for me, Josh’s aunt and two cousins were along for this trip so I actually got to go out dancing with my girls! Here’s how you do it, grab dinner at 11:00 and then go to the clubs. That’s when things are getting started. Inside the clubs, everyone is friendly and having fun. Everyone is dancing and enjoying themselves. It’s so easy to mingle and have a great time. As always, in any city, stay with your friends and be safe!

9. get lost on the island

Josh and I have found some of the most memorable spots while just driving and getting lost. Sometimes, the best plan is no plan at all. Rent a car and explore the island. In fact, that’s exactly how we stumbled upon Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm and how we found Fokos Beach which became one of Josh’s favorite spots.
Mykonos
There are a few rules, make sure you have plenty of gas and a general idea of where you are and where you’re going. We don’t actually advise getting lost and potentially stranded in a place you’re not familiar with. But take the unanticipated stops and explore the unknown.

10. delos island

If you’re looking for a day trip while in Mykonos, catch a ferry to the really cool nearby island of Delos which has great historical and archaeological significance. In Greek mythology, Delos is considered the birthplace of twin gods, Apollo and Artemis and was an important religious center during the Archaic and Classical periods. There are many, many landmarks to explore on this island including The Temple of the Delians, The Terrace of the Lions and the House of Dionysos, to name a few.

Flight

Skyscanner is our go to site for finding the best flights based on prices, dates, times and flight length. It’s incredibly intuitive playing around with all of the airports and dates to find the best deal.

Accommodation

What would we do without Airbnb? Honestly, there are so many places we’ve been that just wouldn’t be affordable for us without Airbnb. In cities like San Francisco you’ll pay around half of what you’d pay for a comparable hotel. We can’t recommend Airbnb highly enough for your next trip.

There are a ton of great hotel/motel sites out there, but we almost always find ourselves booking our next hotel through Booking.com. The site is very user friendly and they often have more properties like small local motels than the bigger sites.

Travel Insurance

Whether you’re concerned about flight issues, medical emergencies or stolen luggage World Nomads has your back. We’ve used them for many of our trips and highly recommend their trip insurance for anyone looking for that extra level of protection. The rates are very affordable and you’ll know that you’re totally covered.
