Top 10 Things to Do in Barbados

We’ll never forget the incredible time we spent on this beautiful Caribbean Island. We were surprised by the diversity we found here. There are the tropical, white-sand beaches we expected, but also lush gullys and dense forests.

The Caribbean food in Barbados is also incredible. We could eat those Bajan flavors every day of the week. So, I’m heading off to try my best attempt at replicating that delicious Carribean casserole with coconut milk. You stay here and check out our list of the Top 10 Things to Do in Barbados.

1. Foul Bay

Foul Bay Barbados
Foul Bay is my personal favorite beach. More isolated than other popular beaches in the South, this beach felt very private and intimate, almost as if we had the entire beach all to ourselves. The water is a little bit rougher at this beach so we didn’t get in very far but we enjoyed walking along the water’s edge from one end of the beach to the other.
We also enjoyed watching the wild chickens and their babies pecking around the trees that line the beach opposite the water. The trees create natural shade and create the perfect spot for a lovely picnic. There are also washroom facilities available at this beach.

2. Bridgetown

bridgetown, barbados, holiday
No visit to Barbados is complete without spending at least a day exploring the capital city, Bridgetown. We took our time walking around this port town enjoying the colorful port and beautiful architecture. There’s so much to see in the city including such landmarks as the Chamberlain Bridge, St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Bridgetown Jewish Synagogue. Of course, no visit to Bridgetown is complete without visiting the Mount Gay Visitor Centre and learning how the rum is made first-hand – and sampling some, of course!

3. Accra/Rockley Beach

Accra Beach Barbados
This is a very popular beach in Barbados and it’s easy to see why. The calm waters here are great for swimmers. There are even tidal pools on the southern end of the beach that are perfect for smaller kids. You can plop down in the sand on your towel or rent a chair and umbrella if that’s your preference. There’s also plenty of fun watersporting rentals available, if you’re feeling active
We had a blast browsing the stalls and kiosks of the local purveyors and checking out their local clothing and jewelry. I enjoyed a fruity beverage from the Tiki Bar while Josh opted for a popsicle made from blended fruit. This is also the spot where the Allamanda Beach Boardwalk begins.

4. Bathsheba Beach

Bathsheba Beach Barbados
This place is incredibly cool and had to be on our Top Things to Do in Barbados list. Along the beach, are huge rock formations which are actually pieces of ancient coral reef that have broken off and washed onto the beach. There are also many shallow pools just off the coast where locals gather to soak during hot summer days and enjoy their infamous “rum punch parties.”
The Soup Bowl at Bathsheba Beach is a very popular place for surfers and even hosts local and international surfing championships. However, use extreme caution if you decide to enter the water here. The combination of riptides, undertow and huge rocks can be lethal.

5. Welchman Hall Gully

This was one of the most delightful things we did in Barbados! Not only is this conservation a pretty place to walk around and enjoy the natural beauty of the island, but it’s also a wonderful way to experience the indigenous wildlife living on the island.
There are no captive animals here. The Gully troop of Green Monkeys know that food will be put out for them every day between 10:30 am and Noon. So they swing through as they please and gather up the food that is left out for them. They come and go on their own without chains or cages. This is the best way to experience wildlife! Fun Fact: The grapefruit is believed to have originated from this gully.

6. Allamanda Beach Boardwalk

Of this entire Top 10 Things to Do in Barbados list, the walk down the Allamanda Beach Boardwalk was one memory that sticks with us. If you’re looking for a way to spend a nice romantic evening with your honey, this is it. We had a really great evening strolling along the boardwalk hand-in-hand. We began our journey at Accra/Rockley Beach and hopped onto the boardwalk from there.
We had dinner at a cute little beach-front restaurant with string lights, soft music and tables that were right in the sand. We got to enjoy the sunset while sipping on a fruity pre-dinner drink. After dinner, we walked off our meal and retraced our path back to Accra/Rockley Beach.
Note: This boardwalk is also called South Coast Boardwalk and Barbados Boardwalk which caused us a little confusion in the beginning.

7. Animal Flower Cave

We took a guided tour through Animal Flower Cave which gets its name from the sea anemones that grow in the pools of the cave. Our friendly tour guide pointed out many formations in the cave which look like various fun things like a hand and a turtle. We also enjoyed exploring the multiple pools in the cave and looking through the windows out to the beautiful sea.

Once we’d finished touring the caves, we sat on the outdoor veranda at the restaurant and enjoyed a delicious glass of chilled limeade while the hilarious bartender entertained us by singing songs from popular ’90s American boy bands. Josh was slightly annoyed but I was delighted!

8. Miami Beach

Miami Beach Barbados
We spent a ton of time being bums on Miami Beach, aka Enterprise Beach. This is the spot for families or folks looking to have a care-free, easy-going day. The sand here is soft and the water is calm. There are rows of palms lining the beach so you can find a shady spot and settle in for a couple hours.
There’s also a food truck or two hanging around most of the time so you can grab a snack and drink if you don’t want to leave the beach for lunch. We were excited to get some pretty tasty french fries. They were golden and crispy, just the way we like them.

9. Cuckold Point

Cuckold Point Barbados
This lookout point between Little Bay and Cove Bay was the perfect spot for us to stop and enjoy a snack on our way to Animal Flower Cave. It was lovely and private. I think we saw only one or two other people the entire time we were there. We sat on a high rock and watched waves crashing into the swirling tidal pools below while we ate our snacks
I recommend that you walk down to the beach below so you can see the arches that have formed in the rocky landscape. There are also many blowholes in the rocks on the beach. Make sure you enjoy this amazing destination from all vantage points.

10. cove Bay

Cove Bay Barbados
We visited Cove Bay quite by accident. We met a local man on the way to Animal Flower Cave who told us to go and we took him up on it, thankfully. We had to drive through a field to find this cool destination. If the local man hadn’t given us a heads up of what to expect, we surely would’ve turned back before we found what we were looking for.
This gorgeous, off-the-beaten-path spot treated us to an adorable little “palm forest” as well as beautiful views of the ocean below. This was Josh’s favorite place we visited in Barbados. Had we been more prepared, we would’ve spent a lot more time at Cove Bay. It’s definitely worth the effort it takes to find this spot.
So that’s it for our list of the Top 10 Things to Do in Barbados.  We hope you visit Barbados yourself and see why we love it so much! Let us know in the comment section below if we can help.

Flight

Skyscanner is our go to site for finding the best flights based on prices, dates, times and flight length. It’s incredibly intuitive playing around with all of the airports and dates to find the best deal.

Accommodation

What would we do without Airbnb? Honestly, there are so many places we’ve been that just wouldn’t be affordable for us without Airbnb. In cities like San Francisco you’ll pay around half of what you’d pay for a comparable hotel. We can’t recommend Airbnb highly enough for your next trip.

There are a ton of great hotel/motel sites out there, but we almost always find ourselves booking our next hotel through Booking.com. The site is very user friendly and they often have more properties like small local motels than the bigger sites.

Travel Insurance

Whether you’re concerned about flight issues, medical emergencies or stolen luggage World Nomads has your back. We’ve used them for many of our trips and highly recommend their trip insurance for anyone looking for that extra level of protection. The rates are very affordable and you’ll know that you’re totally covered.
